Fall is the perfect time to explore the Hill Country and take in the wide array of activities. Whether you are looking to get your heart rate up or for holiday-themed events, or unique Hill Country activities, there are plenty of outdoor things to do with the family this season.


1. NBC Stair Climb & Maze Challenge
Saturday, Nov. 7
Natural Bridge Caverns, New Braunfels
The 2nd annual Stair Climb and Maze Challenge takes place at one of New Braunfels favorite family spots, Natural Bridge Caverns, and combines a 180-steps climb and a one-mile run with a maze challenge. 

2. 13th Annual Thankful Turkey 5K
Friday, Nov. 13
Freeman Ranch, San Marcos
This 5K Run & Walk, hosted by the Bluebonnet Lions Club, travels along a scenic, rolling course with proceeds benefitting San Marcos charities and youth programs.

Saturday, Nov. 14
Landa Park Golf Course
This two-person scramble includes 18 holes of tournament golf with cart, lunch and prizes.

4. Chosen Marathon
Saturday, Nov. 21
Rockin R, New Braunfels
Known as the “prettist race in Texas, the Chosen Marathon travels along the Guadalupe River, offering tranquil Hill Country views.

5. Sights and Sounds of Christmas 5K and 1K Jingle Bell Run
Saturday, Dec. 5
San Marcos
The certified course runs through San Marcos’ downtown and historic district. 


6. Arbor Day Celebration
Saturday, Oct. 24
Landa Park
Tree giveaways and demonstrations, plus tours of the William Schumann Arboretum.

7. Veteran's Day Parade
Thursday, Oct. 29
San Marcos, Downtown Square
Com out and honor those who have served the country.

8. 7th Annual Downtown New Braunfels’ Halloween Spooktacular
Thursday, Oct. 29
Downtown New Braunfels
Celebrate Halloween early in a safe environment with trick-or-treating, family activities, and a Best Costume contest.  

9. Fall Festival 
Saturday, Oct. 31
Fischer Park
Come for the good old-fashioned fun with a pumpkin roll obstacle course, lawn games and family activities, and a costume contest.

10. Nature Education Center Activities
Fischer Park Nature Education Center
Learn to fish or kayak, take a nightlife hike, discover details about the animal kingdom, or take a family fun clinic—these are just a few of the fall offerings at the Nature Education Center. 


11. Photos with Cowboy Kringle
Saturday, Nov. 21
Cowboy Kringle is “Gruene’s own brand of Santa!” These pictures, taken between The Grapevine and Gruene General Store, and a uniquely Texan way to showcase the holiday spirit. 

12. Sights and Sounds of San Marcos
December 3–6
San Marcos
This holiday festival includes a carnival, living Nativity, arts & crafts shopping, live music, entertainment, Santa, and the beauty of thousands of lights along the banks of the San Marcos river. 

13. Santa’s Ranch
November 6–January 2
New Braunfels
One million lights and 100 displays plus animation fill a full mile in the city. 

14. Downtown Wine & Wassail Walk
Saturday, Nov. 7
San Marcos, Downtown Square
The third annual Wine & Wassail Walk is a progressive tour of retail stores in the square with wine and paired hors d’oeuvre 

15. Downtown Holiday Lighting
Friday, Nov. 20
Downtown New Braunfels
Be there for Santa’s arrival and the lighting of the tree.

16. North Pole Village
December 10–12, 2015
Canyon Lake
Enjoy family Christmas fun with a bakery, a Post Office, a toy land, an elves’ house, a hayride, pictures with Santa, and a live nativity. 


17. Wurstfest
November 6–15
New Braunfels Wurstfest Grounds
This 10-day celebration of German food, music and fun brings in people from all over the world.

18. Old Gruene Market Days
November 21–22, December 5–6
With almost 100 vendors showcasing one-of-a-king crafts, Christmas gifts, and Texas food, this is the perfect spot to shop for the holidays.

19. Wassailfest
December 3
Downtown New Braunfels
Sample food, enjoy the live music, and view holiday lights.
