Brighten Your Holidays With These Hill Country Events
What would the holiday season be without a drive or walk through beautiful, twinkling light displays? Some of the best Hill Country events this season revolve around big, beautiful Texas-sized light shows. These are some of the best winter scenes that you won’t want to miss this year.
The Trail of Lights in Zilker Park
One of Austin’s biggest light shows is in Zilker Park. The Trail of Lights foundation is a nonprofit organization that hosts the event each year, ran completely by donation and sponsorship by local corporations such as HEB. The event features the largest man-made tree in America and over a million lights. Admission is free beginning at 7 pm, but you can pay admission to enter before then. Almost as abundant as the lights are the food and drink options.
One thing to remember and prepare for, the awesome light display comes with a large crowd. Consider springing for the parking pass, carpooling or make plans to use an alternative form of transportation.
What could be a better combo that an airy Hill Country night combined with a leisurely drive through the area? Santa’s Ranch in New Braunfels offers its visitors a one-mile drive under and around some of the brightest holidays lights area. You will think the North Pole has come to Texas when you see the illuminated Texas Longhorns surrounded by over 1 million twinkling lights. Top off your experience with a hot chocolate in one hand and delicious kettle corn in the other.
Fredericksburg is a Hill Country town rich in German history. During this time of year, German Christmas tradition can be seen everywhere in the city. Not only is Main Street illuminated, but you can also visit the Marketplatz and check out the 26-foot tall wooden Christmas pyramid. Fredericksburg is also filled with over 150 stores, many offering unique gift ideas for everyone on your list.
Take a step back in time at the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park for the 46th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. There are also many activities happening in the park leading up to the lighting of the tree. Families can walk along the decorated trails, hit the dance floor in traditional German form and enjoy other activities throughout the grounds.
The city provides an extensive guide so you can hit every activity this season.
Take a short drive to Windcrest right outside of San Antonio for a spectacular holiday light display. For years residents of the small town have been encouraged to decorate the homes in a designated theme, this years’ theme is “Sleigh Bells & Cowboy Boots.” However, homeowners don’t wrap their homes in thousands of lights just for fun, there is a much coveted grand prize awarded every year.
Check out these winners’ houses from two years past when you go and judge the homes for yourself.
