The New York post ran a piece recently that read like a love letter to the Texas Hill Country. Their “36 Hours in Texas Hill Country” spent a good amount of time extolling the virtues of Fredericksburg, and deservedly so—it’s fantastic. It also touched on Comfort, Johnson City, and the Pedernales River Valley, among other worthy places to visit.

But as experts in this unique area, we thought we would kick in our two cents. After all, when it comes to the Texas Hill Country and what makes it so special, no one knows like someone who lives here.

If you’re looking to discover the best of the Texas Hill Country, make sure you see:

This central city, located between Austin and San Antonio, is high on convenience, and also on fun. Considered one of the best shopping spots in the world, the San Marcos Outlets feature everything from Gap to Guess to Gucci.

This charming historic city hearkens back to when the area was first being settled by Germans and was known for its cotton crops. Located within the New Braunfels city limits, Gruene offers a nod to the past combined with some of the Texas Hill Country’s best restaurants, like the Gristmill, and entertainment at the famed Gruene Hall.

Dry Comal Creek Wineries

This popular winery directly across the street from the Texas Hill Country’s premier master-planned community, Vintage Oaks, offers daily tastings and annual special events. Part of the Texas Wine Trail, Dry Comal is known as a pioneer in Texas for its Black Spanish Wine.
